Kiln Firing Services

At various times throughout the year, Portland Clay House will offer kiln firing services to the community.

Glaze: Cone 6

Bisque Pricing:

Bisque Fire: $14 per shelf. Shelves are 26" (L) x 13 in (W) x 6 in (H) half-round. 

  • Price is per shelf, not per piece, so minimum price is $14.

  • If your piece is taller than 6" you will be charged for another shelf.

  • If your piece doesn’t entirely fit on the shelf, you will be charged for another shelf.

  • If you use Mayco Stroke and Coat on greenware please let us know. It's fine, but it will be charge as a glaze firing. 

  • To have your pots arrive safely, transport them while still leather hard. We will finish drying them at the studio. Bone dry is the most fragile state of clay. 

 Glaze Pricing:

Glaze Fire: $18 per shelf. Shelves are 26" (L) x 13 in (W) x 6 in (H) half-round. 

  • Price is per shelf, not per piece, so minimum price is $18.

  • If your piece is taller than 6" you will be charged for another shelf.

  • If your piece doesn’t entirely fit on the shelf, you will be charged for another shelf.

  • Ensure the bottom 1/8th in of your pottery is free from glaze. No heavy flux glazes. To avoid damage to our shelves please use a cookie.

Clay and Glaze

  • MUST use cone 5/6 Clay. We bisque fire to cone 04 and glaze fire to cone 6

  • MUST use glazes rated for cone 6.

  • Place your glazes pieces on cookies, if glaze drips damages shelves you will be charged an additional $25.

  • MUST have your pieces clearly marked with your name.

Disclaimers

  • Kilns are firing between 1945 degrees and 2232 degrees. A lot can happen. Portland Clay House is not responsible for damaged pieces or undesirable glaze results. We will do our best to ensure your pottery is well cared for.

  • We will do our best to have your pieces fired within 7-10 days, but do not make any guarantees. Turn around times will vary depending on studio workload.

  • We will email you when your piece is ready. You must pick up your pieces within 30 days or we will dispose of it.

  • Portland Clay House makes no guarantees on the outcome of your piece. Firing can be unpredictable. Glaze and bisque mishaps can happen to even the most experienced potters.
