Drop-in Studio

Drop-in sessions are 2.5 hr studio sessions for people who have taken a pottery class and what to keep practicing. We don't provide instruction during this time.

It's great for when you are in-between classes or if you have pieces you'd like to glaze and fire.

We have a limited number of spots for drop-in pottery sessions. These session are self-guided, no instruction is provided. We will have studio staff available answer questions or show you where things are. You must have experience working with clay. We have strict cleaning guidelines and procedures that everyone must follow.

Clay

We offer 5lb bags of clay, with any unused clay to be returned to the studio.

Bisque-firing

If you complete your project in the same session, we will store your piece for you and when it's dry we will add it to the bisque-firing shelf. We will notify you when it's done being bisqued. To glaze it you will need to book another session.

Glaze firing

If you'd like to use our studio and glazes (dipping glazes only) on your pieces then you'd book a drop-in session. We fire to cone 6 and if you didn't make your piece here we need detailed information on the clay used.

Note

You can bisque fire or glaze fire up to 6 (mug-sized) pots.

Portland Clay House makes no guarantees on the end product. Pottery is a finicky art form and we can’t guarantee your piece will be what you hoped and expected it to be. We will do our best to nurture your piece while it’s in our possession. But glazing and firing can have unpredictable results even for the most experienced potters.

Yes. This allows you to use our glazes and space to finish up your pieces. The price of the session includes firing up-to 6 pieces. If you need to fire more pieces, you can use our outside firing price to add more pieces.

Yes, we will have a shared shelves for drop-in studio projects.

Hand-built projects:

When one is done making their hand-built item, we will label it and store it on a shelf. When it is dry we will move it to the bisque-firing shelf and notify you when it comes out of the kiln.

One can bisque up-to 6 small pieces (or equivalent) as part of the drop-in session fee.

They will need to book another drop-in session if they want to glaze it. We will only store pieces 1 month before we dispose of them.

Wheel thrown projects:

Sometimes people use our drop-in sessions to practice their wheel skills and discard their pieces when they are done. This is a great way to skill build without the pressure.

Sometime people use our drop-in sessions to make something they plan to keep. In this scenario, they can either blow-dry their piece and trim it in the same session or book another session to trim it.

When it is dry we will move it to the bisque-firing shelf when it is dry and notify them when it comes out of the kiln. They will need to book another drop-in session if you want to glaze it. We will only store pieces 1 month before we dispose of them.

Wheel clean-up happens at the wheel. We don't bring the splash pans to the sink area.

Please don't put clay in the "glaze rinse buckets" and please don't put do glaze clean-up in the "clay" rinse buckets.

Don't store pots on the bats, move them to ware boards. Please put away any studio equipment.
